How Long Do Veneers Last? Porcelain vs Composite, and Veneers vs Crowns

Porcelain veneers often last 10 to 15 years or more, composite about 5 to 7. See what shortens their life and how veneers compare to crowns.

Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to change their shape, colour or length. They can transform a smile, so it is natural to want to know how long that result will last before you commit.

The short answer: well-cared-for porcelain veneers often last 10 to 15 years or more, and composite veneers usually last around 5 to 7 years. How long yours last depends on the material, your habits and how well they were planned.

Porcelain vs composite veneers

Porcelain veneers Composite veneers
Typical lifespan About 10 to 15 years or more About 5 to 7 years
Made In a dental lab, from a scan or impression Sculpted directly on the tooth
Appointments Usually two Often one
Stain resistance Very resistant Can stain and dull over time
Repairs Usually replaced if damaged Often repairable in the chair
Up-front cost Higher Lower

No-prep veneers are a type of porcelain veneer made thin enough to bond with little or no removal of enamel. They suit some smiles and not others; see our no-prep veneers page for who they suit.

What shortens the life of veneers?

  • Clenching and grinding. This is a major risk. Heavy forces can chip or loosen veneers.
  • Using teeth as tools, or biting ice, pens, fingernails or hard candy.
  • Gum disease or recession, which can expose the edge of the veneer.
  • Decay at the edges, where the veneer meets the natural tooth.
  • A bite that was not planned for. Veneers that take the wrong forces can fail early.
  • Staining habits, which affect composite far more than porcelain.

Signs a veneer may need attention

  • A chip, crack or rough edge
  • A visible line or dark margin at the gum
  • A veneer that feels loose or looks slightly out of place
  • Sensitivity around a veneered tooth
  • Gums that have pulled back, showing the edge

How to make veneers last longer

  1. Wear a night guard if you clench or grind.
  2. Do not bite hard objects like ice, pens or bottle caps.
  3. Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft brush.
  4. Clean between your teeth daily to protect the gums around the veneers.
  5. Keep up with regular cleanings and checkups, so small issues are caught early.
  6. Wear a mouthguard for contact sports.

Veneers vs crowns: what is the difference?

Veneers Crowns
Covers The front surface of the tooth The whole tooth
Tooth removed Little, sometimes none More, all the way around
Suited to Changing appearance of healthy front teeth Teeth that are weak, broken or heavily filled
Typical use Cosmetic improvement Strength and protection, plus appearance

Veneers are usually the more conservative choice when a tooth is healthy and you want to change how it looks. Crowns are the usual choice when a tooth needs to be held together or protected.

Getting veneers that last

Longevity starts with planning. At Vigée Dental, veneer treatment is planned around your bite and designed to preserve as much healthy enamel as possible, because the less tooth that is removed, the more options you keep for the future. Frequently asked questions

Do veneers need to be replaced?

Eventually, yes. Veneers usually need replacing at some point, but many last well over a decade with good care.

Can a chipped veneer be fixed?

Composite veneers can often be repaired in one visit. Porcelain veneers are usually replaced if they chip, although small chips can sometimes be polished.

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

Veneers planned conservatively, with minimal or no enamel removal, protect the natural tooth as much as possible. Traditional veneers remove a thin layer of enamel, which is why careful planning matters.

Can veneers get cavities?

The veneer itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath and at the edges can. Good brushing and flossing are still essential.
