I created Vigée Dental to be more than a clinic. It is a space where people feel seen, heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. Built on authenticity, transparency, and exceptional standards, Vigée reflects my commitment to dentistry that honours the whole human experience. Every smile we design and every care plan we create is intentional, personal, and rooted in wellness, integrity, and compassion. I named the clinic in honour of Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, a courageous artist who was not afraid to break the norm and who chose to show something real, warm, and human. Her legacy reminds us to lead with heart, to do things differently, and to build a community grounded in excellence, care, and genuine connection.
Palatial Problems
In today's modern world, a straight, bright and healthy smile is a symbol of beauty, health and wealth. A glowing smile was not always equated with success. In the Victorian era, sugar was so prohibitively expensive only the wealthy could afford this rare import. Sugar consumption in the absence of dentistry led to major tooth decay and tooth loss in the upper class. The royals hid their disease by normalizing a closed-lip smile. Smiling with your teeth in the 18th century was considered a lower-class action until a self-portrait of a famous French portraitist disrupted this negative notion.
The First Smile
Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842) established herself in the upper class as the official court painter of Queen Marie Antoinette. At the pinnacle of her career, Vigée Le Brun presented to the world a self-portrait of her smiling with her teeth. She became known as the woman who revolutionized the smile to what we know today.
